Yet, for many researchers, students, and academic professionals, one question remains unanswered: <em>what is the right way to use AI responsibly in academia?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this growing uncertainty, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/paperpal.com\/?utm_source=contentmarketing&amp;utm_medium=paperpal-blog&amp;utm_campaign=join-the-ai-exchange\">Paperpal<\/a> has launched <em>The AI Exchange<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 a global educational series designed to bring together students, researchers, educators, publishers, and policymakers for <strong>open, informed conversations on AI in education and research<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"growing-use-of-ai-and-the-need-for-clear-guidancenbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growing Use of AI and the Need for Clear Guidance<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across higher education and research, there is growing enthusiasm to use AI and unlock its potential in streamlining workflows and enhancing productivity. Digital Education Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaleducationcouncil.com\/post\/digital-education-council-global-ai-student-survey-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global student survey<\/a> showed that <strong>80% of students regularly used AI<\/strong> for tasks like writing and studying. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2411.05025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">large-scale survey<\/a> revealed that <strong>81% of researchers used generative AI and large language models in workflows<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this is accompanied by real concerns about academic integrity, plagiarism, AI disclosure, and adhering to institutional guidelines. A recent Paperpal survey of over 1,400 users revealed that an alarming<strong> 44% remained unclear about AI policies and disclosure requirements<\/strong>. A significant<strong> 74% of the respondents said clear, consistent guidance from institutions would increase their confidence\u202fin using and disclosing AI <\/strong>(since those who did disclose its use were often worried about its repercussions in the absence of clarity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u202f<\/strong>This uncertainty is not just an academic issue. It has real consequences for:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong> unsure how to use and whether to disclose AI use in assignments.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Researchers<\/strong> navigating shifting journal and conference guidelines around AI.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Universities and publishers<\/strong> working to balance innovation with academic integrity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Differing guidelines across institutions are leading to more questions than answers around AI use. Students and researchers using AI are worried about the risk of plagiarism or misconduct, being flagged by AI detectors, and knowing when or how to disclose AI assistance. The panel discussion, moderated by <strong>Christopher Leonard<\/strong>, Director &#8211; Product Solutions at Cactus, included <strong>Dr Hong Zhou<\/strong>, Senior Director of AI Products Management at Wiley; <strong>Joris van Rossum<\/strong>, Program Director at STM Integrity Solutions; and <strong>Christopher Ostro<\/strong>, Assistant Teaching Professor and AI Strategist at CU Boulder, who shared their expert insights on AI for academic writing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engaging session covered the limitations of AI detection tools, misuse of AI humanizers, the need for disclosures, ethical vs unethical use of AI, and the need for shaping clear frameworks and AI guidelines.
