You ask an AI to shorten it, and it gets you to 150 words. At a quick glance, nothing seems missing, but if you read closely and you’ll find small but significant changes:

A correlation has quietly become an effect. “Was associated with better survival” has turned into “improved survival.”

A boundary condition has slipped away. “In cultured cells” is gone, so a result obtained in a dish now reads as though it holds in the body.

A qualifier has been dropped. “Up to 30 percent faster” is now just “30 percent faster.”

This happens when you ask the AI to do two jobs at once: decide what matters, and condense. The fix is to separate the two tasks. This post explains why abstracts are so easy to damage when you cut them, how to decide what stays, and a 2-prompt workflow on Paperpal Agents that keeps the two jobs apart.

Why cutting an abstract is harder than it looks?

Most journals set a strict word limit for abstracts, and first drafts almost always run over. Trimming 70 words from a 220-word abstract means every sentence has to justify its place. Here’s what makes it harder than it sounds.

You’re too close to your own writing. After months with a manuscript, every sentence feels important, and it’s hard to see which words are carrying meaning and which are just padding.

Shortening and prioritising are different tasks. When you ask an AI tool (or yourself) to “make it 150 words,” you’re asking it to decide what’s essential and rewrite at the same time. Under pressure to hit the number, it will often compress the very words that signal how strong your claim really is.

What to keep, compress, and remove

Before you cut anything, sort the abstract into three buckets.

Essential: the load-bearing scientific content. Your research question or gap, the key methods that define the study, your main results (with the numbers), and what you conclude from them. If removing it changes what the reader would believe about your study, it stays.

Compressible: accurate, but wordier than it needs to be. Background and motivation, examples, elaboration, and secondary detail usually fall here. The idea stays, but it can often be said in fewer words.

Removable: redundant or filler. Sentences that repeat what another sentence already says, and phrases that add length without adding information.

A few small words deserve extra care, because they look like filler but aren’t. Hedges and qualifiers such as “associated with,” “up to,” “may,” or “in vitro” define how far your claim can be trusted. Cutting them doesn’t just shorten your abstract, it changes your finding.

How to trim your abstract with Paperpal Agents

This workflow keeps the two jobs separate. First, Agents reviews your abstract and decides what’s Essential, Compressible, or Removable. Then it trims the abstract to your limit, following clear rules. It takes about 10 minutes, and you only need your abstract and the two prompts below.

To start, open your document in Paperpal, click Agents in the sidebar, and paste in the prompts one at a time.

Step 1: Find what can be safely removed or changed

Because you’re so close to your own abstract, it’s harder to see what words can be removed without altering what you want to say.

Prompt 1 makes it simple for you. It uses clear rules to classify parts of your abstract as Essential, Compressible, or Removable. The results are presented in an easy-to-review table, so you can easily see what changes can be made in order to meet your target word count.

PROMPT 1

Review my abstract document and return a table with columns: Element | Text (the sentence or phrase) | Status (Essential / Compressible / Removable) | Why.

Mark redundant and filler sentences as Removable; mark sentences that only add context, motivation, examples, or elaboration as Compressible, even if accurate; mark only load-bearing scientific content as Essential.

If in doubt, select the Compressible category. If you are tagging singular words in one category, collate them in one row. End with the number of words removable and compressible separately without touching anything Essential.

Run this prompt on Paperpal Agents

Step 2: Trim your abstract to the desired word count

Once you’ve reviewed the results, continue in the same conversation with Prompt 2, which asks Agents to trim your abstract while following a clear set of rules.

These rules help ensure that even as you get closer to your goal (reducing the abstract from 221 to 150 words in the current example), your abstract does not lose essential information or any of its original meaning. In fact, Agents will tell you a realistic minimum rather than force a trim.

PROMPT 2

Cut my abstract to 150 words. Tighten all Compressible to hit the target. If that is not enough, revisit Essential, move any padded ones to Compressible, and tighten harder. If 150 still forces you to break meaning, stop, say the realistic floor (for example 180), and cut to there instead.

Keep every idea, including context.
