If you want your research to actually reach people beyond your committee, it has to become a published paper.

Around 60-70% of theses never get published, because converting a 200-page document into a 10-20 page paper is a skill nobody really teaches you. You finish your degree, start your job, and the energy (and the university support) to do the conversion just isn’t there anymore.

Dr. Faheem Ullah has been on both sides of this. He holds a PhD and postdoc in Computer Science from the University of Adelaide, has authored more than 40 publications, and several of his own papers came directly out of his own thesis. In a recent Paperpal webinar, part of The AI Exchange Series, he broke down exactly how he does it. Here’s the framework, plus the tips he shared for making the process faster.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Key Takeaways

Publishing your thesis isn’t optional if you want the research to count. It’s how the work reaches people, and how you get recognition for it.

Don’t try to fit everything in. Pick the strongest, most novel slice of your thesis and build the paper around that.

Spend more time deciding what goes into the paper than you expect. That decision matters more than the writing itself.

If you use AI tools in the process, use them ethically and within your target journal’s guidelines.

</details>

Thesis vs. Research paper: How are they different?

Before you can convert your thesis, it helps to understand exactly what you’re converting it into. A thesis and a paper aren’t different lengths of the same thing. They’re written for different purposes, different readers, and different outcomes.

Thesis

Research paper

Purpose

A requirement of your degree

Disseminating your findings to the field

Scope

Broad, flexible

Narrow, focused

Length

Often 150-300+ pages

Typically 10-20 pages

Depth

In-depth analysis, broad lit review

Focused analysis, specific lit review

Methodology

Every detail included

Only what answers your research question

Timeframe

Months to years

A few weeks of review

Evaluated by

A committee assessing your degree

Peer reviewers assessing publication worth

Audience

A handful of people (committee, supervisors)

The broader research community

Why most theses never make it to publication?

If you’ve stalled on turning your thesis into a paper, you’re not alone, and it’s usually one of these four things:

Picking what to cut is genuinely hard: You’ve done years of research. Deciding what stays and what gets left out of a much shorter paper is the first real hurdle.

You lose your support system: During your degree, you have supervisors and university resources to lean on. Once you’ve graduated, that support usually disappears right when you need it for the conversion.

Condensing is its own skill: Fitting 200 pages of findings into 10-20 without losing what matters is not the same skill as writing the thesis in the first place.

Journals have requirements theses don’t: Word limits, page limits, specific abstract formats, replication packages. None of this applies to your thesis, and all of it applies the moment you submit to a journal.

Dr. Faheem’s own PhD thesis had 8 chapters. The first (introduction) and last (conclusion) obviously didn’t become standalone papers, but the remaining six all did, each published in a different, credible venue. One thesis can absolutely become multiple papers. It depends on your field and how your research is structured, but it’s worth planning for from the start rather than assuming you’ll only get one paper out of it.

Watch the Webinar Recording

Dr. Faheem’s Conversion Framework to Turn Your Thesis into a Research Paper

Step 1: Choose what’s actually worth publishing

You can’t fit a 200-page thesis into a 20-page paper, so don’t try. Instead:

Go for your strongest finding. If you answered three research questions and one produced clearly stronger, more novel results, lead with that one.

Prioritize novelty. Reviewers assess how new your findings are. If a section of your thesis covers ground that’s already well established, it’s not your best candidate.

Pick results with the fewest limitations. Every study has some threats to generalizability. Choose the findings least affected by context-specific limitations (like a dataset drawn from a single country or population).

Cut background your audience doesn’t need. A thesis has to explain foundational concepts. A paper doesn’t. If your audience already works in the field, skip the 101-level explanations.

Favor trending topics over saturated ones. If two of your three research questions are on well-covered ground and the third is more current, that third one is your paper.

Step 2: Build an outline, then map your chapters to it

Dr. Faheem’s framing here is genuinely useful: think of your paper like a movie.

Your title is the movie title.

Your abstract is the trailer, and it needs to be just as attention-grabbing.

Your introduction is the opening scene. It’s also where a reviewer usually decides whether they’re inclined to accept or reject your paper, so it carries a lot of weight.

Your literature review is “what other movies are like this one.” It’s not a list of summaries; it’s where you position your work against what’s already out there and identify the gap you’re filling.

Your methodology is the production process. How was this made, and can it be trusted?

Your results are the movie itself. The actual content.

Your discussion is the critics’ response. What worked, what didn’t, and why it matters.

Once you know the shape of the paper, map your thesis chapters onto it. Your thesis title, abstract, and introduction are all broader than they need to be for a paper. Each needs to be narrowed and made specific to the one story you’re now telling.

Step 3: Write each section with intent

A few things worth calling out from each section:

Abstract: Cover six things: the importance of the study, the gap, your objective, your methodology, key findings, and implications.

Introduction: Answer why this research was needed, why it’s new, and why it’s significant. This is arguably the hardest section to get right, and it’s the one reviewers weigh most heavily.

Literature review: Group papers by theme, not by chronology or source. For each group, do critical analysis, not description. What’s missing across these studies is more important than what they found. That gap is what your paper exists to fill.

Methodology: Justify every choice (why this dataset, why this approach). Include a process diagram if you can. Check your target journal’s conventions before you finalize this section; formatting expectations vary more here than almost anywhere else in the paper.

Results: Let your tables and figures carry the weight. State the finding, add supporting numbers, and highlight the pattern, don’t just narrate your data in paragraph form. And make sure your results actually support the claims you made in your abstract and intro. Overclaiming here is a common, avoidable mistake.

Discussion: This is the trickiest section to write. Structure it around six questions: What’s different in your findings versus prior research? What’s similar? How do your different results connect? What are the implications for practitioners? For researchers? And what are the limitations? Be upfront and honest about the last one.

Conclusion: Cover the research question, key findings, implications, limitations, future work, and end with a strong closing statement.

Paperpal Agents are AI-powered research assistants that help researchers work through complex academic tasks using natural-language instructions and relevant research context. They fail to get published because nobody ever breaks down what the conversion actually involves, so it stays a someday task that never gets done. You now have the breakdown: pick your strongest work, rebuild the structure with intent, write with a narrower audience in mind, review it like a reviewer would, and find the right home for it.

None of that requires redoing the research. It requires treating the conversion as its own project, with its own steps, rather than something you’ll “get to” once things settle down. Start with Step 1. Pick the chapter or finding you’re proudest of, and go from there.

You’ve spent months, maybe years, on your thesis, but finishing it isn’t the finish line.
