You refine a draft with an AI editing tool, run it through an AI detector, and get a higher score than you expected. You revise to bring it down, check again, and end up chasing a number that keeps moving.

AI assistance has become an important part of research writing, and used well; it genuinely strengthens the work. In return, it calls for humanizing, the subtle and consequential work that makes a manuscript read as the author’s own, rather than as the output of a language model. If pursued as a mere tactic to reducing AI detection score, humanizing reduces to rewriting one’s own work to satisfy an instrument never designed to judge authorship.

This guide sets out six techniques for ensuring that AI-assisted writing reads as the author’s own. It also reviews the recent research supporting them. Together, these allow a researcher to rely substantially on AI while retaining full authorship of the final text.

What humanizing is (and what a humanizer isn’t)

Humanizing is the practice of restoring one’s own writing: the reasoning, the voice, the specificity, the rhythm, and the interpretive choices. A model can render a passage correct. Making it read as the author’s own is what differentiates text that reads as correct and text that reads as authored.

A humanizer is something else entirely: a tool with one job, lowering a detection score. Detectors read writing style, not the source of ideas, so a humanizer reworks the surface style and the number moves. Humanizing works on the reasoning and ideas underneath, which a detector cannot see. It won’t reliably move the score, and it isn’t meant to. Its aim is authorship.

What the research says

Critical engagement with AI makes it helpful

Khuder (2026) followed 55 doctoral writers and found that AI improved a draft only when the author engaged with it critically, testing each suggestion against disciplinary judgement and overruling it where needed. A blind comparison of human and AI essays points the same way: readers rated the human prose as more scholarly and more distinctly voiced (“Does the Thesis Still Make Sense?,” 2026). Restoring your voice makes the writing both better and recognisably yours.

Detector scores are wrong targets we’re humanizing to settle authorship

A study of roughly 135,000 manuscripts found that editing shifts detector readings unpredictably, so a high score after revision is no evidence that AI wrote the text.

The scores are also easy to game. One analysis found that once AI-generated text was run through a humanizer, fewer than 4% of passages stayed flagged, while honestly disclosed AI-assisted editing was flagged at a higher rate. What this points to is a problem with the target, not the tool: a score cannot, on its own, settle who wrote the work

Transparency protects authorship

A 2026 open-science framework in Research Integrity and Peer Review argues, disclosing AI use protects authorship. Detection is a useful first-pass check, but detectors can’t prove who wrote something. So instead of trying to “catch” AI use, researchers should just declare how they used it.

Paperpal’s AI disclosure templates handle the formatting, producing a statement in the form each journal or examiner requires, ready to review and insert.

Six ways to make AI-assisted writing your own

Each technique targets something AI editing tends to flatten, with a before-and-after example.

1. Make the reasoning explicit

A model can state findings and connect them, but it can’t say why a finding matters to your field, framework or argument. Read each AI-assisted paragraph and ask one question: so what, for my argument? Wherever a paragraph only reports, add the sentence that interprets.

Before: “The intervention group showed a 12% improvement over the control group (p < 0.05), suggesting the treatment was effective.”

After: “The intervention group showed a 12% improvement over the control group (p < 0.05). This is notable because two prior trials of the same compound, dosed daily rather than weekly, found no effect, which points to the dosing schedule, not the compound, as what matters.”

Why it works: The data are identical. The comparison and the interpretation are the author’s.

2. Replace the general with the specific

AI prose is fluent and confident, but it drifts toward the safe, general version of a claim. What makes your work distinctive is exactly what that version leaves out: the precise mechanism, the actual figure, the particular case you studied.

Before: “A growing body of research indicates that sleep supports memory consolidation, with specific sleep stages contributing to the stabilisation of different memory types.”

After: “Slow-wave sleep, concentrated early in the night, consolidates declarative memory; REM sleep, concentrated towards morning, consolidates procedural memory. Waking early therefore cuts more REM than slow-wave sleep, and costs more of the day’s skill learning than its facts.”

Why it works: The first could sit in any paper. The second names the mechanism and its specific cost, the kind of detail only the author can supply.

3. Restore discipline-specific language

Every field has its own terminology and conventions of argument. A capable model handles the vocabulary fluently, so the problem is rarely a wrong word. It’s subtler: a term used a little loosely, two adjacent concepts conflated, or a claim pitched stronger than the method supports.

Before: “To address baseline differences, the study controlled for a range of confounding variables, ensuring the treatment and control groups were statistically equivalent at the outset.”

After: “The study used propensity-score matching to balance the groups on observed covariates, though unobserved confounding remained a limitation.”

Why it works: The first sounds expert, and that’s the trap: it overclaims. Naming the exact technique and the limitation it carries is what the author adds.

4. Take a position and stand behind it

A model hedges towards the safe middle: “this may suggest”, “further research is needed”. An author commits, states what the evidence shows, and accepts being answerable for it.

Before: “These findings may indicate a possible relationship between class size and test performance, though further research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.”

After: “Because students were randomly assigned to class sizes, the 0.3-standard-deviation gain in test scores for smaller classes reflects a causal effect, not a correlation. A well-powered replication that found no gain would overturn this conclusion.”

Why it works: The first commits to nothing. The second makes a definite claim, grounds it in the study design, and names what would overturn it.

5. Show where your work fits in the debate

A model surveys “the literature” from a distance, naming no one. An author names the specific studies the work extends or disputes, showing which conversation it joins and what it adds.

Before: “A growing body of work has scrutinised this effect, and recent reviews increasingly attribute it to sample-size artefacts rather than a stable underlying phenomenon.”

After: “Where Smith (2021) reads the effect as a sample-size artefact, the present analysis shows it survives at every sample size tested, putting this paper in direct disagreement with the field’s current default.”

Why it works: The first gestures at the literature. The second names the work it disputes and stakes out a position in a live argument.

6. Retain your phrasing quirks

Readers and reviewers come to recognise an author’s habits: favourite verbs, recurring turns of phrase, the shape of the asides. AI editing smooths these away. You don’t need to restore them sentence by sentence. Keep a short list of your own constructions, pulled from a paper you’ve already published, and reinstate them in one final pass.

Before: “The results are promising and underscore the intervention’s potential, but several limitations should be acknowledged, as these temper the strength of the conclusions that can be drawn.”

After: “The results are promising, but three limitations qualify them, and the third the present design cannot resolve.”

Why it works: The claim is unchanged. The second carries a cadence a reader recognises as the author’s.

Follow these steps and the detector score stops being the question: the work is already yours. When it’s time to disclose, Paperpal’s AI disclosure templates generate a statement in the format your target journal or examiner requires, ready to review and insert.

References

Disclosure is not documentation: An open science framework for documenting generative AI use in scholarly research and publication workflows.
