What is a Process Essay? (and how to write one)

In academia, students and researchers often find themselves having to write process essays – a specific kind of academic writing that guides readers through a particular project or explains how a task was accomplished. But why is this important? By breaking down processes that may sometimes be complex into clear, detailed, and definitive stages or steps, researchers can tell readers how something was done or how it works.

For example, researchers can use process essays when writing lab reports to explain the process of conducting a particular experiment. However, it is essential to keep in mind that process essays must not be viewed as only a set of instructions. Given that they are a valuable resource for readers seeking to learn new skills or gain insights into specific procedures, essays must present processes accurately and sequentially.

Types of Process Essays

There are two basic types of process essays:

  1. Directional essays present a series of instructions on how to do or make something. Following the instructions in a step-by-step way from beginning to end helps readers achieve the desired results. Directional essays are commonly used in day-to-day life. Take, for example, instructions on how to assemble a stool or how to start an oven.
  2. Informational essays explain how things work and provide background information about a specific process. For example, an essay explaining the composting process for gardening would describe each stage, from the collection of kitchen waste, layering, maintaining temperature and humidity, etc., to final usage.

So, an informational essay explains a topic to the reader without necessarily leading to a specific outcome, unlike a directional essay, which provides clear instructions and aims for a particular result. In other words, while directional essays provide directions, informational essays provide explanations to the reader about a specific process.

How to Write a Process Essay?

A well-crafted process essay is written in a simple, easy-to-understand manner, free from ambiguous terms, and without heavy technical words and complex language. The process being described or explained should ideally be presented in a logical sequence, accurately and in sufficient detail. Also, ensure that all the steps are presented, even though some may seem insignificant to you. This is vital as it helps readers follow along without confusion. Using transitional words or phrases can help maintain continuity between paragraphs or different sections of the essay.

Importantly, before you start writing a process essay, take time to understand the knowledge level of readers so that necessary explanations and context can be provided accordingly. Where appropriate, explain the reason why specific steps were followed and clearly state what should not be done. Let us now take a look at some of the key steps that need to be kept in mind when writing a process essay –

  1. The first step to writing an effective process essay is to select a topic that is of interest not only to you but also to your readers. Sometimes, the topic may be assigned to you by an instructor; if not, pick a topic that is not only relevant but also one that you can gain a good understanding of.
  2. To be able to select a relevant topic, it is essential to understand who you will be addressing. The profile of your audience will guide the complexity of language, the kind of terminologies used, the depth of details and so on.
  3. Once you have selected your topic and identified your audience, the next step is to create an outline that will help structure and organize the essay so that it can be presented logically. Use sub-heads and bullet points to list steps in chronological order.
  4. Next, craft a concise and impactful introduction for your process essay that should capture the reader’s interest and provide a clear overview of the process. It must include a short background on the topic and its relevance, in addition to a clearly stated thesis statement and the author’s position on it.
  5. Present the main body of the essay next. This section forms the very core of the essay as it offers a detailed description and listing of the steps or stages of the process or topic being discussed. Importantly, refer to the outline created and present the steps methodically using separate paragraphs or sections. This helps to create a straightforward narrative that readers can follow without confusion. It is also always useful to state the purpose of each step so readers have a context.
  6. The last step in crafting a process essay is writing an impactful conclusion. The conclusion should summarize the key steps and reinforce the importance of the process. It should restate the thesis statement and also provide final tips or recommendations, if any are to be included.

Finally, keep in mind that the difference between a good process essay and a great one often lies in the attention to detail and how well the steps are tailored to the audience. Since the goal is to explain a process or give directions, using clear, simple language is crucial in writing process essays. Use visual aids like diagrams, charts, or images to make complex processes more straightforward to understand. Think about areas that could be unclear for readers and address them proactively.

For example, if you are writing a directional essay, ensure the instructions are accurate by following them yourself or having someone else test them. Avoid long-winded sentences or unnecessary details that may confuse readers.

Process essays not only serve as instructional guides but also foster critical thinking by breaking down tasks into manageable components. That is why understanding what a process essay is and learning how to craft an impactful one is considered an essential skill for early career researchers.
