Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept in education and research. From supporting literature reviews to improving writing flow, AI tools are transforming academic workflows worldwide. Yet, for many researchers, students, and academic professionals, one question remains unanswered: what is the right way to use AI responsibly in academia?
To address this growing uncertainty, Paperpal has launched The AI Exchange — a global educational series designed to bring together students, researchers, educators, publishers, and policymakers for open, informed conversations on AI in education and research.
Growing Use of AI and the Need for Clear Guidance
Across higher education and research, there is growing enthusiasm to use AI and unlock its potential in streamlining workflows and enhancing productivity. Digital Education Council’s global student survey showed that 80% of students regularly used AI for tasks like writing and studying. Another large-scale survey revealed that 81% of researchers used generative AI and large language models in workflows.
However, this is accompanied by real concerns about academic integrity, plagiarism, AI disclosure, and adhering to institutional guidelines. A recent Paperpal survey of over 1,400 users revealed that an alarming 44% remained unclear about AI policies and disclosure requirements. A significant 74% of the respondents said clear, consistent guidance from institutions would increase their confidence in using and disclosing AI (since those who did disclose its use were often worried about its repercussions in the absence of clarity).
This uncertainty is not just an academic issue. It has real consequences for:
- Students unsure how to use and whether to disclose AI use in assignments.
- Researchers navigating shifting journal and conference guidelines around AI.
- Universities and publishers working to balance innovation with academic integrity.
Differing guidelines across institutions are leading to more questions than answers around AI use. Students and researchers using AI are worried about the risk of plagiarism or misconduct, being flagged by AI detectors, and knowing when or how to disclose AI assistance. This is where Paperpal stepped up with The AI Exchange initiative.
Introducing The AI Exchange by Paperpal
The AI Exchange was created to bridge these gaps. An educational initiative under Paperpal, it brings thought leaders together to discuss the evolving role of AI in academia. By hosting expert discussions, sharing insights and resources, and encouraging community dialogs, The AI Exchange aims to:
- Empower academics to leverage AI responsibly in their work
- Provide clarity on institutional guidelines, including disclosures
- Allay fears around the use of AI in academic writing and research
- Create a space to ask questions, share insights, and stay updated on AI
- Equip educators to tackle the increasing adoption of AI in classrooms
- Inform publishers and policymakers working to standardize AI guidelines
At its core, The AI Exchange is about building AI literacy in education and research—helping academics confidently leverage AI to stay competitive, while understanding how to use it responsibly and effectively.
Highlights from Sessions Conducted So Far
There have been two excellent sessions under The AI Exchange so far, both addressing pressing concerns and queries raised by students and researchers.
AI for Academic Writing: Separating Fact from Fiction
In August, we brought together top academic voices to discuss the realities of how AI is currently being used in academic writing. The panel discussion, moderated by Christopher Leonard, Director – Product Solutions at Cactus, included Dr Hong Zhou, Senior Director of AI Products Management at Wiley; Joris van Rossum, Program Director at STM Integrity Solutions; and Christopher Ostro, Assistant Teaching Professor and AI Strategist at CU Boulder, who shared their expert insights on AI for academic writing.
The engaging session covered the limitations of AI detection tools, misuse of AI humanizers, the need for disclosures, ethical vs unethical use of AI, and the need for shaping clear frameworks and AI guidelines. Watch the full session recording below.
Critical Thinking in the Age of AI: Practical Tips for Academics
This session explored one of the most debated questions in education: Will AI diminish or enhance critical thinking? Paperpal experts provided a run-through of the critical thinking process in research, touched on some ways AI can negatively impact the process, and offered a practical framework on how you can use AI responsibly to elevate your critical thinking and reasoning skills.
Led by Samuel Leslie, Senior Product Manager at Paperpal, and Nolita Coelho, Product Director at Paperpal, this session highlighted how, when integrated thoughtfully, AI tools can be a trusted partner in analysis, creativity, and problem-solving. It’s not meant to help students and researchers avoid doing the work, but can deepen and speed up their thinking process; the real value is in blending human thinking and judgment with machine intelligence.
